Three Simple Things To Put Your Focus Back Where It Belongs


Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” In one form or another, we are all familiar with, and likely do our best to live by this Golden Rule. The question is...are we neglecting ourselves in the process? Are we taking the action to love ourselves as we would have ourselves love others? I’ll repeat...are we taking the action to love ourselves as we would have OURSELVES LOVE OTHERS? Is our body, mental health, emotions or spirit hurt by our focus on others? Are we so busy keeping our commitments or being kind to our fellows that we forget to honor and care for ourselves?

A pet peeve of mine was someone saying they were going to do something and then not doing it. As long as I can remember, I always put A LOT of energy into making sure that I kept my word to others. So much so, that I failed to notice that I regularly let myself down.

In looking at this closer, I began to see it wasn’t that I was being selfless by my focus on others. Quite the contrary. I was stunned to discover how very ego-driven I’d been. If my commitments were “public” I was sure to do “good”  because subconciously I needed the approval and admiration. However, if I was the only one who knew about it; perhaps that quiet resolution that I was going to stop eating refined sugar, or exercise regularly, or call my Dad on Sundays, it somehow didn’t get the same degree of urgency.

What I’ve found, is when I started putting the focus on myself in a healthy way, it became effortless to STOP putting unhealthy focus on others.

So, what’s the solution?

Simple...although, not always easy:
1. Remember that keeping a commitment to yourself is no less important than keeping it to another.
2. Pay attention to what your healthy limits are; financial, emotional, physical...
3. Consider being kind to yourself in the process.

That’s it! With practice you’ll enjoy life and others WAY more!

So, my friends, what is one thing you can do RIGHT NOW for yourself? What is one thing you’ve been putting off, delaying, or minimizing that is important for YOURSELF? Schedule it! Do it! And, then do it again and again!
