Are You Tired Of Always Talking About The Same Few Things?

Can You Relate?

Now that the elections are behind us, no doubt we are all going to take a much needed breather from the day in and day out political banter.

Going into the holiday season you’d be smart to take a cue from this pause.

After all, this time of year is meant to be festive.  And, even if you’re on the same team, politics can be a stressor of family and friends, and at the very least put a damper on the celebrations.

So what else is there to talk about? A tip I love, from the “freakin’ fabulous” Clinton Kelly, is what NOT to talk about.

As he puts it, don’t be a D.R.I.P. Meaning, when you’re at a party...party! Don’t discuss; Dieting, Religion, Illness or Politics. Whaat?! Where’s the fun in that?!

The truth is, there is A LOT of fun to be had outside of these four topics.

If it’s difficult for you, maybe it’s an indication that you’re in a bit of a personal rut. I know I’ve been there. Heck, I may even be there now; lately, all I really want to talk about is my dog!

Weird, I know. But, being smack in the middle of my big biz launch, there is a certain comfort and ease to it. It’s similar to talking about your relationship or your kids all the time. The problem is, it really becomes more of a report, and less of a conversation.

And guess what, that makes you BORING…and yes, a DRIP.

So…perhaps it’s time we (yes I’m including myself in this) challenge ourselves to stretch a bit.

It’s actually simpler than you would think. Here is a brainstorm of some of my personal areas of interest, beyond DRIP, and outside of my work, family and pets;

Historical fiction
Movies
Comedians
The Voice
Modern Family
Crock Pot Recipes
The Chew
Ballet Barre
Classic Rock Music
Alexander McQueen
Train travel
Living abroad
Ireland
Greece
Architecture
Jumping Horses
Naps
The perfect Matcha Latte
Mind games...literally, games to sharpen my noggin.

Well done, doncha think? In the time it took me to type up that quick list, I became not only exponentially more interesting, but also the type of party guest that would always be welcomed back.

What came to mind for you? What are your DRIP defaults? What do you talk about so much you bore YOURSELF? More importantly what are the areas that make you sparkle that you give little attention to? Could they be a great conversation starter?

Go ahead and list them. What are three, or even one great conversation starter? I want to know, please comment for all to hear.

And, remember, now that you have a list of fun things to chat about, it’s a lousy conversation if all you do is talk…LISTEN, too!

As always, I am in your corner….

Love,
Thais
